First stop was Fairbanks, where winter temperatures can drop to -50F to -60F during the long, dark winter.

Flowers

Flowers

We had fantastic weather with flowers in bloom everywhere.

Riverboat Rivers Plane

Our outing on the Riverboat Discovery, a diesel powered sternwheeler, traveled the Chena & Tanana Rivers.
We were told that many Alaskans have their own planes because of the remote living conditions.

Sled Dogs

Susan Butcher

The riverboat pulled up to the shore next to the four time Iditarod race winner Susan Butcher’s house and kennel.
We learned about sled dogs, mushing, and running the Iditarod trail.

Athabascan Village
We stopped at a replica of an Athabascan
native village for craft and culture presentations.

Dixie Alexander
Dixie Alexander, a native Alaskan artist, showed
examples of her elaborate beadwork and sewing.

Fish Camp Flywheel

Dixie shows the fish camp with its operating fishwheel, and demonstrates techniques for preparing salmon.

An afternoon bus trip brought us to the El Dorado mine where Dexter Clark demonstrated placer and sluice box mining techniques.

Then it was our turn!

See how we did in the next series of pictures.
